My name is Jatuporn, my friends and family call me “Jum”.
Born in a small market town called “Yantakhao”, in the Southern province of Trang, I moved to the UK in 1992 to marry the love of my life and together we have three beautiful children. As a proud mother “Mae” to three kids soon to fly the nest, what better gift can a mother give than the secrets to the recipes they grew up enjoying.
Not wanting it to be so secret, they encouraged me to share (with the world) my love of cooking, natural products and strong beliefs in the therapeutic properties of herbs and spices that our own Mother Nature has gifted to us all. Or maybe they encouraged me for the convenience of getting mum’s food online!
And so the Mae Jum journey began…
Over 8 months, I was back and forth to Thailand, visiting suppliers, producers, farmers and getting a crash course in food production. I wanted to make sure that we stayed true to the ethos and mission of the business whilst maintaining the highest level of quality and safety. Finally, we found a family-owned producer that really understood what I was trying to do, and agreed to work with me.
Now I’m delighted by our first products, it was a lot harder than I expected, but I had the support and help from my family, and together we made Mae Jum a reality. We have plans to bring sauces, and other paste recipes, with the aim to go 100% organic. I want to share some recipes with you too. Read more about our approach.
We are proud that our pastes only use 100% natural ingredients that are all sourced from Thailand. Our pastes are made from a traditional recipe passed down from my mother and is presented in a way that you will find in many Thai markets.
Shrimp paste is a pungent, strong aroma ingredient that is traditional in the making of Thai Curry, but it is normally added at the time of cooking, and not mixed in with the paste when sold at the market. We have decided to exclude shrimp paste so that we have a completely natural blend of fresh herbs, spices and a pinch of salt.
It’s a bonus that we can offer an authentic taste of Thailand to everyone as it’s vegan friendly and gluten-free. Learn more about our range of Thai curry pastes.
You will find some of my family’s favourite recipes here, so please let me know how you find them. I will add new ones as we go with videos on how to cook them to help you achieve the best results. Thai cooking isn’t difficult, but it does require a balance of many ingredients, some of which may seem strange together, but each one playing a vital role.
My traditional recipes will try to respect my Thai heritage so you can experience what it should really taste like and it could inspire you to adapt and create into your own dishes too. I can also show you how to include these pastes in dishes that are not curries, such as crab cakes, soups and BBQs. Take a look at all our yummy recipes and tips on our blog.
